On Tuesday, October 13th, the administrative boards of the Citadelle Hospital and the Bois de l’Abbaye Hospital Centre (CHBA) reviewed a merger project. This initiative aims to enhance care services, maintain proximity to patients, and ensure a sustainable future for public hospitals in Liège.
This approach leverages the complementarities between the two hospitals and a shared vision for future challenges, with the goal of improving access to specialized care, increasing investment and recruitment capabilities, while maintaining quality care close to patients.
The future hospital entity, rooted in the Liège territory, would represent 5,300 employees, nearly 800 doctors, and over 1,300 beds, spread across 5 hospital sites: Citadelle, Seraing, Waremme, Laveu, and Herstal. This merger would consolidate existing collaborations in disciplines such as digestive surgery, the Breast Clinic, oncology, clinical biology, and cardiology.
Beyond medical synergies, the project seeks to boost the institutions' attractiveness, support employment, and prepare for necessary investments to adapt to sector evolutions. Upcoming steps will focus on finalizing collaborations, defining balanced governance, and consulting with stakeholders. This initiative could also pave the way for broader cooperation among public hospitals in the Liège region, potentially within the framework of the Liège University Hospitals (HUL) project.
