As part of its '25 Years – 25 Projects' series, SOWAER is highlighting a strategic yet often unseen infrastructure: the comprehensive stormwater management system developed around Liège Airport, aimed at fostering economic development and safeguarding the region.

Stormwater management is a critical issue for developing new economic activity zones (ZAE) while protecting the territory from heavy rainfall. The Carlens 1 storm basin, located northeast of the airport, is part of this global system. It contributes to the preparation of the Cubber and Stockis plains, representing nearly 170 hectares designated for economic development.
The objective is twofold: to have the necessary infrastructure for developing these future zones while ensuring controlled stormwater management. In collaboration with AIDE, SOWAER has developed an infrastructure to channel water towards the Meuse river. The Cubber-Stockis project involves approximately 4.5 km of pipelines, constructed using both deep jacking and open trench methods, with some pipes reaching up to 2 meters in diameter.
This infrastructure addresses a long-term challenge: anticipating the effects of heavy rainfall, protecting the territory, and creating the conditions for future economic development. It is directly linked to SOWAER's mission to develop economic activity zones around airport infrastructure, thereby enhancing their attractiveness and that of the Walloon region.
