The ban on installing or replacing oil or coal-fired boilers in existing buildings, initially planned for January 1, 2026, will finally come into effect on January 1, 2031. This decision was made by the Walloon Parliament, which has also implemented several support measures to facilitate this transition.
Among these provisions, a transitional period will allow owners to anticipate this change. It will also be possible to replace the burner of an oil boiler until December 31, 2034. Derogations will be granted when available alternatives are not technically, economically, or functionally feasible.
For new buildings, the rules remain unchanged: the ban on installing oil or coal boilers has been applicable since January 1, 2026.
The choice of a replacement solution will depend on the characteristics of the dwelling. Options include heat pumps, biomass boilers, hybrid systems, district heating networks, and natural gas where available. Technical constraints related to energy networks and building characteristics will be taken into account to ensure that adapted solutions remain accessible to households.
