The Province of Liège gathered eighty local elected officials and municipal representatives on October 12 for a meeting focused on climate change adaptation and concrete action.

After over ten years of supporting municipalities in implementing their Climate Plans, the Province of Liège held a second meeting at Val Benoit. The objective was to foster concrete projects and future collaborations between municipalities with the Province's assistance.
Discussions centered on three key challenges: heat, drought, and floods. Strategies were explored to enhance territorial resilience, including greening initiatives, creation of cool islands, wetland restoration, water management, forest fire prevention, de-sealing surfaces, and river re-meandering.
Experts such as Yasmina Loozen (ISSeP), Adèle Hanin (Amblève River Contract), Joël Privot, Sébastien Doutreloop, and Grégory Mahy (ULiège) provided insights. Working groups identified priority vulnerabilities and outlined collective solutions.
Regenerative hydrology, applied at watershed level, was identified as a priority action for flood prevention. This approach aims to slow runoff, promote soil water infiltration, and retain water upstream.
« The Province intends to continue its role as a partner to the municipalities by fostering cooperation, expertise sharing, and the emergence of concrete projects to better face climate challenges, » emphasized the Provincial Deputy for Sustainable Development.
