Following the detection of an H5N1 avian flu outbreak in Tongeren-Borgloon, a 10km surveillance zone has been immediately put in place. This measure affects the municipality of Oreye and imposes specific rules for all poultry and bird owners, whether private or professional.
Bird owners are required to protect their animals from any contact with wild birds. It is recommended to feed and water them in a way that prevents such contact, and not to use surface water or rainwater accessible to wild birds without appropriate treatment. Moving poultry, captive birds, or hatching eggs into or out of the surveillance zone is strictly prohibited. Similarly, poultry markets, fairs, exhibitions, and competitions are banned.
In case of suspicious symptoms, increased mortality, or a significant drop in production among birds, it is imperative to contact a veterinarian and/or the AFSCA's Local Control Unit without delay. These measures have been in effect since September 30, 2026, for an indefinite period.
