The city of Huy has seen its average Building Energy Performance (BEP) rating improve from an E to a D, a direct outcome of policies focused on enhancing building energy efficiency.

The BEP certificate, essentially the 'energy identity card' for buildings, assesses energy performance under standardized usage and climate conditions. It evaluates the building envelope (thermal insulation) and systems (heating, hot water, ventilation). The rating uses indicators like energy class, total and specific primary energy consumption, renewable energy use, and CO2 emissions, and includes recommendations for improvement.
For this new classification, the Walloon Region analyzed results from certificates issued in Huy for 7055 dwellings, comprising 3800 apartments, 14 municipal buildings, and 3241 single-family homes.
This label improvement is attributed to several factors: the momentum in energy renovation projects, primarily from the private sector but also public initiatives, supported by substantial grants that have since been replaced by a new aid scheme; the missions undertaken by the city's Ecopasseur Service, including thermographic inspections (ecopasseur@huy.be); the services of the Energy Desk providing advice and assistance for renovation projects (https://energie.wallonie.be/home/contacts/guichets-energie-wallonie.html); and the support from Rénov'Énergie and its platform offering free guidance to citizens on their energy renovation projects (https://www.renovenergie.be/).
The City of Huy thus reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and aims for a more resilient territory. It has pledged to meet and exceed European targets for CO2 emission reductions of -55% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, through energy efficiency measures, renewable energy development, and planning for adaptation to climate change consequences.
