The Liège Muco Centre, located at the Citadelle, provides specialized care for 189 cystic fibrosis patients, enhancing their quality and life expectancy.

Cystic fibrosis, an inherited genetic disease, affects approximately 1,379 people in Belgium, with a majority being adults. On average, a child with cystic fibrosis is born every ten days in the country. This complex condition primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, with varying manifestations among patients.
Since 2020, generalized neonatal screening allows for early detection, facilitating tailored care before severe symptoms appear. However, some diagnoses are made later, particularly in adults with more atypical forms of the disease.
Belgium has seven specialized centres, including the Liège Muco Centre, the only one in Wallonia. At the Citadelle, 189 patients (78 children and 111 adults) receive support from a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers, and dietitians.
Thanks to this specialized care and therapeutic advancements, patients' quality of life and life expectancy are considerably improving.
On the occasion of Mucoweek, the Muco Centre, in partnership with the Muco Association, is hosting a day of awareness and exchange on Monday, November 16th, from 9 AM to 4 PM, in the hall of the Citadelle.
