Celebrating its 25th anniversary, SOWAER highlights the responsible demolition of former military buildings at the Cubber site near Liège Airport, ushering in a new era for the area.

As part of its 25th anniversary, the Walloon Airports Company (SOWAER) is revisiting one of its historical missions: the repurposing of former military zones located near Walloon airports. A new video capsule showcases the deconstruction project of old military buildings in the Cubber zone, east of Liège Airport. This former large-scale maintenance hangar and military barracks is now entering a new phase of its history.
Thanks to a rigorous methodology implemented with the teams from Eloy construction, the buildings were deconstructed progressively and safely. Particular attention was paid to material valorization, including source sorting, concrete recycling and reuse, waste reduction, and limiting the carbon footprint through a circular economy approach.
Beyond the construction site itself, this operation illustrates SOWAER's commitment to sustainably transforming sites inherited from their military past to give them a new purpose serving the territory. A symbolic element of this history has been preserved: the stone bearing the construction date of the former barracks has been entrusted to the White Bison museum to preserve the site's memory.
In this new video from the series « 25 years – 25 projects », Marc-Olivier Blezer, construction site manager, explains how SOWAER combines land rehabilitation, sustainable development, and heritage valorization in its projects.
