Residents of Verviers and several surrounding municipalities have reported an unusual smell in their tap water, resulting from recent rains that temporarily altered the raw water quality from the lake.

Following recent exceptional rainfall, which followed a period of drought and a fire in the region, runoff has temporarily affected the quality of the raw lake water. Analyses revealed a higher concentration of ammonium, intensifying the chlorine smell after water treatment.
The SWDE (Walloon Water Company) has nevertheless specified that checks carried out at the treatment plant and on the distribution network confirm compliance with drinking water standards. The water can therefore be consumed without any risk despite this temporary odor.
SWDE teams have adjusted treatment and strengthened controls. While awaiting a return to normal, it is recommended to let the water run for a few moments before consuming it or to store it in the refrigerator in a carafe to reduce the smell.
